Drastic fluctuations in blood sugar levels can cause energy crashes, fatigue, headaches— and nobody wants that. Luckily, with a few lifestyle and dietary changes, you can keep those blood sugar levels stable all day.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-2" style="--awb-text-transform:none;"><h1><strong>Here&#8217;s how:</strong></h1>
<h3><strong>Eat Complex Carbohydrates</strong></h3>
<p>Simple carbohydrates— such as candy, refined white bread, and sugary drinks— can lead to a spike in blood sugar levels. The body digests these carbohydrates very quickly, meaning that these sugars enter the bloodstream all at once. Instead, incorporate more complex carbohydrates, such as whole-grain bread, quinoa, and oatmeal, into your diet. These complex carbs help stabilize blood sugar levels, and they will keep you satisfied for much longer because of their high fiber content. They also contain many vitamins and minerals that keep you healthy.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3><strong>Increase Your Fiber Intake</strong></h3>
<p>Fiber-rich foods, such as veggies, fruits, beans, legumes, and complex carbohydrates, help stabilize blood sugar levels. The fiber slows the breakdown of carbohydrates, meaning that nutrients (and sugar) are slowly released into the bloodstream instead of all at once. Although fruit is good for you, be aware that these are simple sugars and can increase blood sugar levels.</p>

<p>Protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates are all essential nutrients for our health, whether we are monitoring blood sugar levels or not. However, eating a well-balanced diet also helps keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day. Proteins and fats are an essential part of the equation. Incorporating these macronutrients into each of your meals also keeps you full for longer. Complex carbohydrates are equally important, but make sure they aren&#8217;t the only nutrients in your meal &#8212; plating your food in a balanced way will help get enough of each of these nutrients.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Don&#8217;t Skip Breakfast (or Any Meals!)</h3>
<p>To keep blood sugar levels stable, you need to eat regularly. This means that you should never skip meals, especially not the first one of the day. Start your morning off with a well-balanced breakfast that contains protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. It should be full of fiber and low in simple sugars (so, maybe swap the orange juice for some tea or water). Try to eat in regular intervals, having small snacks between your three main meals to maintain your blood sugar levels.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-clearfix"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-3 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-4" style="--awb-text-transform:none;"><h3><strong>Get Enough Sleep</strong></h3>
<p>Sleep is crucial for our health, partly because it helps stabilize our stress hormone, known as cortisol. When we don&#8217;t get enough sleep or feel stressed, cortisol levels increase. In turn, cortisol increases blood sugar levels. Sleep deprivation also increases stress levels, so its detrimental effects are two-fold. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and taking time for yourself to relax, whether that&#8217;s going for a walk or reading your favorite book.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3><em>It&#8217;s important to keep those stress levels down.</em></h3>

Our bodies prefer to use carbohydrates for energy because they are the easiest to break down and convert into energy that we can use.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-7"><h1><strong>Glycemic index refers to how quickly it takes your digestive system to break down specific carbohydrates into a simple sugar called glucose, which then enters the bloodstream.</strong></h1>
<h3></h3>
<p>The glycemic index of foods is essential to know if you’re monitoring your blood sugar levels because foods that break down quickly will also cause blood sugar levels to spike. Foods with a high glycemic index (GI) break down quickly, and foods with a low GI break down slower.</p>
<p>Foods that already contain simple sugars, such as sweets, rice, and white bread, are digested and converted into energy very quickly and therefore have a high glycemic index.</p>
<p>Typically, you’ll want to limit or avoid your consumption of these foods if you are at risk of developing or already have diabetes. Many foods that have a high GI contain added sugars, such as candy and soda. We know these sugary foods aren’t healthy regardless, but this doesn’t mean that all foods with a high GI are bad for you.</p>
<p>If you are very active and exercise regularly, your body will burn a lot of glucose for energy. You might need to replenish your energy levels quickly to avoid a dramatic decrease in blood sugar levels, which can cause fainting and weakness.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-clearfix"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-6 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-5 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy"><div class="fusion-image-element in-legacy-container" style="--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--h2_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--h2_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--h2_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:var(--h2_typography-font-size);--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--h2_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:var(--h2_typography-line-height);--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:var(--h2_typography-letter-spacing);"><span class=" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-3 hover-type-none"><img decoding="async" width="820" height="312" alt="quinoa vegetables low glycemic index" title="3" src="https://healthywholelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/3-1.png" class="img-responsive wp-image-7846" srcset="https://healthywholelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/3-1-200x76.png 200w, https://healthywholelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/3-1-400x152.png 400w, https://healthywholelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/3-1-600x228.png 600w, https://healthywholelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/3-1-800x304.png 800w, https://healthywholelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/3-1.png 820w" sizes="(max-width: 1125px) 100vw, 820px" /></span></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-8"><p>However, there are healthier high GI foods that you can reach for after your workout than a bar of chocolate. Potatoes are relatively high in glycemic index, but they contain many valuable nutrients and are perfect for a quick supply of energy. Rice, store-bought cereals (which usually contain added sugars), sweets and chocolates, and white bread are also high GI foods.</p>
<p>On the other hand, whole grains, such as quinoa and barley, and starchy vegetables such as sweet potato and squash have a low glycemic index. These carbohydrates are more complex, and it takes the body a longer time to break them down into simple sugars. As a result, glucose is slowly introduced into the bloodstream over a more extended period, and blood sugar levels will not spike.</p>
<p>Eating low glycemic index foods is crucial if you need to regulate your blood sugar levels, as is the case with individuals who have diabetes. However, these foods are healthier for you in general, regardless of whether you have blood sugar issues or not.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-clearfix"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-7 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-6 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-9"><p>If you enjoy eating store-bought cereals for breakfast, try switching them out for a healthier, low GI cereal such as steel-cut oats or bran. Although fruits taste sweet, most of them have a low GI. Apples, berries, peaches, mango, and citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit are low glycemic index foods.</p>
<h3><em>However, be cautious of overly sweet fruits, such as ripe bananas, figs, and grapes, as they are high GI foods. Try to pick bananas that are greener because they contain resistant starch that does not spike blood sugar levels. Lastly, beans and legumes are low GI foods that are also high in protein.</em></h3>
